ALS Ice Bucket Challenge - Best Story of the Month
Great story of a highly successful and fun fundraiser for Lou Gerig's Disease...
From ALSA.org "ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Takes U.S. by Storm"
August 12, 2014
In the last two weeks, the Ice Bucket Challenge has quite literally “soaked” the nation. Everyone from Ethel Kennedy to Justin Timberlake has poured a bucket of ice water over his or her head and challenged others do the same or make a donation to fight ALS within twenty-four hours.
Between July 29 and today, August 12, The ALS Association and its 38 chapters have received an astonishing $4 million in donations compared to $1.12 million during the same time period last year. The ALS Association is incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from those people who have been doused, made a donation, or both. Contributions further The Association’s mission to find a cure for ALS while funding the highest quality of care for people living with the disease.
"We have never seen anything like this in the history of the disease,” said Barbara Newhouse, President and CEO of The ALS Association. “We couldn’t be more thrilled with the level of compassion, generosity and sense of humor that people are exhibiting as they take part in this impactful viral initiative."

Franconia Notch / Ridgeline, NH
First Posted at Rambling Web Peaks at Franconia Notch, New Hampshire
I've hiked Franconia Notch quite a bit over the last few years. The more I hike this area, the more fascinated I become with the 'layout' or topography of the area. A week and a half ago I hiked North Peak, and took this picture. It's a 'panorama' shot, so there is some distortion. However, the view from North Peak is quite impressive, and it gives a unique perspective of Franconia Notch, and specifically Peaks along Franconia Ridge.

Quotes from Thomas Jefferson
I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend.
Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.
Do you want to know who you are? Don’t ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.
In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.
I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.
Peace and friendship with all mankind is our wisest policy, and I wish we may be permitted to pursue it.

My Mother and I in Search of Hookers... Sort Of...
View full article Looking for Hookers with My Mother… In Amsterdam
Excerpt:
"Not a lot of people can say that they went out looking for hookers with their mother, but I can. Shortly after college I went on a cruise with my mother, aunt, and members of my aunt’s church group. We started in England and traveled the coast of Norway eventually ending up in France. We made several stops along the way wandering through the towns taking in the sites and learning about the area. We joked that I was becoming my mother’s body guard as I would follow a couple steps behind her and pull her out of the way of bicycles, cars and whatever else might come our way.
One night at dinner my mother, my aunt, my aunt’s friend and I were talking about tomorrow’s activities in Amsterdam. My aunt and mother were discussing how they heard that the prostitutes in Amsterdam stood in glass storefronts. The three of them, I thought, were joking when they decided it would be fun to find these ‘hookers in the windows.’ My mother scheduling this activity would not have been too shocking, but it was unexpected from my aunt and her friend as I thought it was a well known fact that hookers are rarely kept in the nice part of town.
Anyway, that afternoon after seeing the sights, my mother, aunt, her friend, and I went out looking for hookers. The belief was that hookers wouldn’t go on duty until the afternoon, so as it got dark we started trying to find the red light district. As it became clear that they were not joking, I started to protest."
