Socially I lean left, while I lean right in terms of economics and government size. Don't worry, I'm not here to woo you to my side - I'm here to make a request: fight for what you believe in, but don't fight the people who disagree with you.

The reason for writing this is because it feels like too many of the American people are following Washington's lead, and partaking in a surreal bitter three ring circus. Lots of people have very good reason to be mad. Being mad can be constructive if well channeled, yet being mad can also result in more anger, bad behavior, and a big frickin' mess.

More and more, people are questioning the motives of those who disagree with them. There's always been some of this name calling and snarkiness, but it's now really ugly. It takes a little maturity to recognize that the people that disagree with you, right or wrong, have reasons for their point of view. That doesn't mean you shouldn't disagree, it doesn't mean you shouldn't passionately fight for what you believe in. What it means is a little decency and respect never hurt anyone. In fact, in helps greatly in most situations.

I know, an article on decency in politics - it's like I just hit my head while falling off the turnip truck. Here's the thing, it can't hurt to try. Some people do relish in the fighting and the nastiness, but I'm willing to bet more people are tired of it. We can argue without belittling someone, cursing, or calling people names. We're capable of better - and it can't hurt to give it a try.

In the last two weeks, the Ice Bucket Challenge has quite literally “soaked” the nation. Everyone from Ethel Kennedy to Justin Timberlake has poured a bucket of ice water over his or her head and challenged others do the same or make a donation to fight ALS within twenty-four hours.

Between July 29 and today, August 12, The ALS Association and its 38 chapters have received an astonishing $4 million in donations compared to $1.12 million during the same time period last year. The ALS Association is incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from those people who have been doused, made a donation, or both. Contributions further The Association’s mission to find a cure for ALS while funding the highest quality of care for people living with the disease.

"We have never seen anything like this in the history of the disease,” said Barbara Newhouse, President and CEO of The ALS Association. “We couldn’t be more thrilled with the level of compassion, generosity and sense of humor that people are exhibiting as they take part in this impactful viral initiative."

I've hiked Franconia Notch quite a bit over the last few years. The more I hike this area, the more fascinated I become with the 'layout' or topography of the area. A week and a half ago I hiked North Peak, and took this picture. It's a 'panorama' shot, so there is some distortion. However, the view from North Peak is quite impressive, and it gives a unique perspective of Franconia Notch, and specifically Peaks along Franconia Ridge.
Sort Of...View full article Looking for Hookers with My Mother… In Amsterdam

Excerpt:

"Not a lot of people can say that they went out looking for hookers with their mother, but I can. Shortly after college I went on a cruise with my mother, aunt, and members of my aunt’s church group. We started in England and traveled the coast of Norway eventually ending up in France. We made several stops along the way wandering through the towns taking in the sites and learning about the area. We joked that I was becoming my mother’s body guard as I would follow a couple steps behind her and pull her out of the way of bicycles, cars and whatever else might come our way.

One night at dinner my mother, my aunt, my aunt’s friend and I were talking about tomorrow’s activities in Amsterdam. My aunt and mother were discussing how they heard that the prostitutes in Amsterdam stood in glass storefronts. The three of them, I thought, were joking when they decided it would be fun to find these ‘hookers in the windows.’ My mother scheduling this activity would not have been too shocking, but it was unexpected from my aunt and her friend as I thought it was a well known fact that hookers are rarely kept in the nice part of town.

Anyway, that afternoon after seeing the sights, my mother, aunt, her friend, and I went out looking for hookers. The belief was that hookers wouldn’t go on duty until the afternoon, so as it got dark we started trying to find the red light district. As it became clear that they were not joking, I started to protest."

Women's suffrage or woman suffrage[1] is the right of women to vote and to run for office. The expression is also used for the economic and political reform movement aimed at extending these rights to women and without any restrictions or qualifications such as property ownership, payment of tax, or marital status. The movement's modern origins can be attributed to late-18th century France.
Limited voting rights were gained by women in Sweden, Britain, Finland and some western U.S. states in the late 19th century.[2] International organizations were formed to coordinate efforts, especially the International Council of Women (1888) and the International Woman Suffrage Alliance (1904).[3] In 1893, New Zealand became the first nation to extend the right to vote to all adult women. The women in South Australia achieved the same right in 1894 but became the first to obtain the right to stand (run) for Parliament.[4][5] The first European country to introduce women's suffrage was the Grand Duchy of Finland—then a part of the Russian Empire with autonomous powers—which also produced the world's first female members of parliament as a result of the 1907 parliamentary elections.

In most Western nations woman suffrage came at the end of World War I, with some important late adopters such as France in 1944 and Switzerland in 1971.[6]
