Fight for a Cause - Don't Fight Against People

I consider myself a slightly right of center Independent. Socially I lean left, while I lean right in terms of economics and government size. Don't worry, I'm not here to woo you to my side - I'm here to make a request: fight for what you believe in, but don't fight the people who disagree with you.

The reason for writing this is because it feels like too many of the American people are following Washington's lead, and partaking in a surreal bitter three ring circus. Lots of people have very good reason to be mad. Being mad can be constructive if well channeled, yet being mad can also result in more anger, bad behavior, and a big frickin' mess.

More and more, people are questioning the motives of those who disagree with them. There's always been some of this name calling and snarkiness, but it's now really ugly. It takes a little maturity to recognize that the people that disagree with you, right or wrong, have reasons for their point of view. That doesn't mean you shouldn't disagree, it doesn't mean you shouldn't passionately fight for what you believe in. What it means is a little decency and respect never hurt anyone. In fact, in helps greatly in most situations.

I know, an article on decency in politics - it's like I just hit my head while falling off the turnip truck. Here's the thing, it can't hurt to try. Some people do relish in the fighting and the nastiness, but I'm willing to bet more people are tired of it. We can argue without belittling someone, cursing, or calling people names. We're capable of better - and it can't hurt to give it a try.
